The benefits of coloring pages: 1) Self expression – coloring on a blank ”canvas” (piece of paper), is a way for children and adults alike to express themselves. You can tell a lot about the way a person is feeling by the images that they draw, the colors that they use, etc. It is important to give children a chance to express themselves, and not all children express themselves through words and through writing, many use art. 2) Color recognition. 3) Therapy – for many people (myself included) coloring is therapeutic. Regardless of whether it’s scribbling, or coloring the ”best picture ever”, coloring can be a way to de-stress, after a busy morning of school work, wind down, and calm down, after the stresses of a day at school or work. 4) Grip/Control – many children learn how to hold a pencil, pen, marker, or colored pencil, by first learning how to hold a crayon. The small muscles needed for penmanship later begin to be developed while coloring. 5) Coordination. 6) Building motor skills. 7) Focus – Paying attention to a single task for a length of time is necessary for coloring and for all sorts of things throughout one’s life. 8) Boundaries – Another thing that children learn from coloring pages, with preprinted pictures on them, is how to accept boundaries. While a toddler or preschooler might scribble all over a coloring sheet, with no respect for the boundaries (lines on the coloring page), as the child gets older, they will begin to respect those lines, and make an effort to color between them. While I encourage blank paper coloring for free expression as often as possible, for many preschoolers pre-printed coloring pages are their first exposure to printed boundaries. This early exposure to boundaries in print, will be a huge help when handwriting time comes around, and the child has to respect the boundaries of the preprinted handwriting lines on the paper. 9) Milestone – This is the last little ”importance” of coloring that I will mention for now, and that is that coloring in the lines is a milestone, a sense of accomplishment, the first step towards a successful academic career for many children. For many children coloring in the lines is just as important as counting to 10, counting to 100, reciting the alphabet, learning the multiplication facts, and so forth. It’s a milestone that says ”yes I can” do whatever I come across, and it provides children with pride, a sense of self worth, and helps them to feel accepted in a society that is often quick to judge, and slow to respond. This sense of accomplishment will carry them through life, and help them not to give up so easily, when something new comes along.
Kids have a natural inclination towards drawing and coloring and this quality is used appropriately by coloring pages. Colors attract children in a big way and that is why playschools or preschools keep their environment multicolored so as to retain the interest of children. These pages provide an excellent way of teaching children about the nature, water bodies, trees, and other things that they see around them. Kids learn quickly when learning process is made fun for them and coloring pages for kids do just that. Researches have shown that outdoor activities prove to be a good learning process for kids. You can take your child to a zoo to let him/her interpret nature with the help of coloring pages. Earth worksheets, pages for coloring, or activity books can be a good option for parents and preschool teachers. Pages with food drawings, animated drawings, alphabets drawings, and many more are also available online that can be used as a printouts.
Coloring Builds Fine Motor Skills – Perhaps the biggest benefit children get from coloring pages of animals or their favorite cartoon characters is the development of fine motor skills. This includes learning the proper way to hold the crayon, marker or colored pencil they are using to draw with. When supervising young children learning how to color use gentle instructions to encourage them to hold the writing implement near the tip, cradled between the tips of their thumb, index finger and middle finger. Many children grab the crayon in their fist. Correcting this improper usage is an important first step towards real penmanship. Beyond the skill of holding a crayon or pencil properly, learning to keep the lines drawn on the coloring pages is another example of fine motor skills. This is a more advanced concept, and may well take several years for the child to fully be able to accomplish, so only positive comments should be made on your youngsters coloring attempts in this regard. It is better to have them enjoy coloring and want to do it often then become discouraged by negative feedback and harsh criticisms.

Moral Education Through Coloring Pages – Christian parents can easily find many free Bible coloring pages online. Even if your family is not religious it is important for children to understand religious concept, icons, and events from the Bible. This is an issue cultural education, not just a moral foundation. In a broader perspective these images can be used as a starting point for conversation on moral topics in general. Of course coloring pages depicting Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and even Humanist principles are freely available online. Beyond these simplistic and often jingoistic sources, a foundation for a broader moral education can be found if parents use a little creativity in their search. Many state government departments offer free couloring sheets promoting good citizenship. For example the State Department of Environmental Protection might offer activity pages promoting keeping the environment clean. Other important civic and moral lessons that can be taught via coloring are sharing, loyalty and self-discipline.
Why Children’s Coloring Pages are Important. Today’s children still love coloring just as much as the Old People used to when they were children. In addition to this fact, it’s now known that coloring is a wondrous pre-reading activity which helps children develop the hand-eye coordination they’ll need for learning how to write. Parents who encourage the use of children’s coloring pages are also encouraging an array of other development skills including decision making, patience, persistence, and creativity. Children’s coloring pages on the Internet offer a greater assortment of subject matter than the books in the stores can, and if your children want printed coloring books you can fire up that printer of yours and create a customized, one of a kind coloring book for your child. It only takes a few minutes to print out several coloring pages, and these lead to hours of entertainment and brain stimulation for your child.
